We've seen 12" media technology grow from 2.6 GB in the mid 80's to 30 GB in 2001 and 5.25" media grow from 1.3 GB to 9 GB in the same span. The 9GB and 30GB media will soon be replaced by the 60, 90GB. The new generations of optical libraries offer robotics, drives, and interfaces that are faster, more reliable and go further. Lower densities are inefficient storage requiring more disk exchanges to retrieve customer files. Media migration is also an opportunity to reorganize documents on platters through surface striping, clustering, de-clustering, or filtering out closed documents, keeping the active documents closer at hand. More compact storage organization can allow you double to quadruple the storage capacity per square foot of expensive computer room space and reduce equipment maintenance and support costs.
